Website Updates: March 2017
Over the past week or so, I've made a few improvements to the site and some related things. But those changes may have gone unnoticed by most of you because they're to pages/content that you didn't have as much reason to see in the past. I wanted to highlight some of those changes so you can know about them and can take advantage of the improvements.
But before I dive into the details, I want to acknowledge something: keeping this site up-to-date, improving on it, and creating content takes a lot of time. Even as I improve my process (e.g., I set-up some writing software yesterday that helped me write out three blog posts you'll see this week), it's hard for me to devote the time for consistent content creation without some additional support.
That's why I took some time today to set-up my Patreon page! For those of you unfamiliar with the service, Patreon is a platform that allows you to subscribe to content creators. You can donate an amount of money per month that you choose, which you can cancel at any time (even after just one payment). Nearly all of the funds go directly to the content creator, and they even have ways for us content creators to give our patrons exclusive content. While I'm new to Patreon, I fully plan to take advantage of the platform and to share some nice rewards with my patrons, which I have detailed on my page. Even if you're not ready to become a patron, you can view my profile there to see more about the rewards, my goals, and so on.
New home page
If you haven't been to the homepage of my site in awhile, you'd be forgiven. Before, it just had my name and logo, plus the navigation at the top of the page. No real content to look at. To fix that, I made a new homepage that has collections of content that I've created (something I've wanted to do for awhile).
Next time you're at my homepage (the one that shows up if you go to ddecator.com), try clicking on one of the categories. It will expand and show you links to some blog posts and podcast episodes. It's a nice way to discover content quickly without having to use the content searching tools on my main blog page.
My plan is to update this page from time-to-time to add new categories (e.g., I just added the Therapy category yesterday), and to add content within each category. If there's something you'd like to see on there, let me know in the comments!
New newsletter layout
On the left side of my blog and podcast pages, I've had a "subscribe" button for quite awhile. This button would bring you to a page where you could sign up for my newsletter. The newsletter is automatically generated every Saturday morning with the latest content from my site. When you sign up, you can select to get sent content from my blog and/or my podcast.
But for a long time now the template for the newsletter didn't match the color scheme for my site. It was based on an older version of my site that used light blue pretty heavily. That's no longer a problem, though, as I've updated the layouts for the newsletter emails! Now they will match the look of my site more consistently.
Didn't know that I offered a newsletter? Now you do! To sign-up, just click the button below. No emails are generated if there's no new content, and you can always unsubscribe whenever you want. I've also updated the buttons on my blog and podcast pages to say "Newsletter" instead of "Subscribe" to make it more clear what the button is used for.
As I mentioned at the beginning of the post, I've been working on getting some new software set-up to help make it easier for me to write blog posts. I'm also getting more familiar with how to create podcast episodes, so I'm hoping to make those more consistently as well. (The main challenge right now is finding a good place to record with the limited equipment that I have).
I'm also hoping to start making some YouTube videos. I tried to make one last week, but ran into some difficulties with the quality, so I may end up having to wait until I can at least get a proper microphone. But that's something to look forward to! Any videos I create will also be posted here, so you'll see them if you subscribe via my newsletter or via RSS.
I'm excited to be continuing to make improvements to this site, and it's all thanks to you readers/listeners. The great feedback I've gotten has kept me motivated to keep creating content, and I hope that you all continue to find the content helpful.
