Personal Life Update 9
It's been a little over a month since my last update post, and I should have expected that saying "things are finally starting to settle down again" would be jinxing myself. (And no, I don't mean that seriously; I've had to work with several highly superstitious people recently, but that doesn't include myself). It's been a whirlwind of activity and delays, and I'm still trying to get caught up. With that said, let's go through a summary of everything that has happened.
First, looking at the grad school/psychology-related updates, as most of them fall within that category. The most exciting update is that the publication I mentioned in my previous post was accepted and published! I used the publication as an opportunity to finally setup a profile on ResearchGate, and you can see the article there. Getting that publication was a nice source of motivation to continue my work on other publications, though I've admittedly had little time to actually do so.
For those unaware, the end of January through the end of February tends to be when grad school interviews take place. Current grad students are highly involved in this process as they help to coordinate things and setup times to meet with the applicants, interview them, answer their questions, and so forth. DePaul's happened recently, along with a few other things that happened to coincide with that time.
First, I had a really bad cold that prevented me from doing much for a few days (I couldn't think clearly enough to be productive). Second, the one class I'm TA'ing had a big assignment I needed to grade, and the other class had their first exam that needed to be graded. Paired with the grad school interviews, I ended up losing about a week's worth of productivity that I'm still working to recover. My to-do list is getting closer to being caught up, though we'll see if that continues to be true.
Unfortunately, those delays required me to cut back on other things, like writing blog posts and recording podcast episodes. I'm hoping to get back into doing both regularly again, but I'm not sure that will happen this week.
Today the priority is getting some writing done. In grad school, it's very easy for writing to take a backseat to everything else (as PhD Comics likes to point out). It's difficult to do consistently when so many things are demanding your attention, but ultimately it comes down to prioritizing what's important. That's why today is going to be primarily devoted to writing for me, starting with this post but then moving on to my dissertation. I've got my earphones in with some good music playing, had my morning coffee, and the window near my desk is open so I can enjoy the fresh air on this surprisingly warm weekend.
In terms of non-academic updates...well, there isn't too much to say, unfortunately. My wife and I have been trying to go out when we can, though both of us have been busy and unable to as much as we want. We tried a great restaurant in a suburb a few weeks ago, and hope to go on more trips like that sometime soon.
Other than that, there isn't too much to mention yet. There are still things being planned, like presenting at a couple of conferences and hopefully visiting family soon, but nothing that's set in stone.
I think that pretty much covers the big things going on right now. I'd like to write more, but that's mainly to avoid working on my dissertation, so I'm not going to allow myself to postpone things any further. Hope you're all having a good weekend!
P.S. - If you haven't noticed yet, I added a video to my social page. It's something I was asked to make for Chegg Tutors, which is the site I use to offer tutoring sessions. It's something I put together fairly quickly before a night class, but I think it turned out pretty well!
