Important Site Update: Ads
As you may have noticed, my site now contains a card at the bottom of most pages. Yesterday the card was blank, as my site was under review, but beginning today you should see advertisements on that card. Here, I want to explain why I made this change to my site.
Why am I adding ads to the site?
My hopes for this website are to make helpful resources and information available to others easily, to disseminate research findings in a way that most people can access and understand, and to provide many ways for people to engage with me. Doing so takes a lot of time and effort, though, and doctoral programs are already very demanding. In order to help me justify putting the time and effort into this site, I needed to find a way to have it support my wife and I in some way. Ad revenue allows me to keep all of the content on my site free and easily accessible to all of you while still getting that necessary support.
Sorry, I don't like ads, I'm just going to block them
If you want to use an adblocker, I can't stop you from doing so. However, I do wish you would consider the fact that ads help to support the creators of most sites, and by blocking ads you are withholding an income from them. Personally, I recently set my adblocker to only block malware and not ads. And on this site, my goal is to make sure the ads are as unobtrusive and as useful as possible (which is why I went with Google AdSense; I trust Google's ability to make ads relevant, and like their focus on ads being useful rather than annoying).
Doesn't that mean I'm being tracked on your site?
The ads on your site are annoying
I'm just starting out with AdSense, so at this point I have the settings pretty much set to the default. Google does, however, give me some control over what type of content is displayed on my site. If you find that the ads are annoying in any way, or you see an ad that you feel is inappropriate, please let me know. Again, I will do my best to quickly address the situation in order to make sure my site continues to be a pleasant and useful resource for you.
How can I support your site?
If you'd like to support the work I'm doing on this site, then first and foremost: thank you! If you want to support me, there are a few things I ask you do and don't do:
- Do: consider not blocking the ads on this site
- Do: Let me know if you'd be interested in a donation option
- Don't: Click the ads just to show support (only click them when you want to)
Hopefully the inclusion of ads on my site will be painless, but please be understanding if there are some hiccups at first. I want this site to be whatever will be useful for my readers, and that includes making the ads useful as well.
Do you have thoughts about the inclusion of ads on my site? Any suggestions for other ways viewers can show support? Let me know in the comments! (You can comment anonymously on all of my posts!)
