Personal Life Update 7
It's amazing how much can be accomplished in the course of a week! (Especially when you're trying to get everything done before an upcoming holiday). Thankfully, my motivation from last weekend after attending the ABCT conference has held up, and I've already gotten drafts of my dissertation introduction and an updated version of a manuscript to my adviser for feedback. My hope is to keep this writing motivation up so I can get even more done, which will also mean sharing helpful information with others on this site.
Between the first winter storm of the season happening yesterday (I already had the pleasure of walking on sheets of ice last night due to freezing rain covering the sidewalks), and Thanksgiving coming up in a few days, it definitely feels like a time of transition. It's during these transition times that I like to take some time to reflect on my life, including my priorities and workflow. It's a great time to experiment with new ways of doing things, to think through the goals you have for the short- and long-term, and to see if your trajectory matches your goals.
For me, I've been doing that by adjusting my to-do list to make sure the tasks I want to complete more frequently are on there and repeat. I've also set-up a Trello board to monitor my different professional/life goals so I can track what needs to be done, what's in progress, and what I've completed. It's a good way to be reminded of accomplishments, but to also make sure things stay on track without forgetting some of the goals. Or, if some of them no longer match my trajectory, I can at least make the choice to not follow through instead of simply forgetting.
And that list of accomplished tasks is one of the things that I'll be using this Thursday when I consider all of the things that I'm thankful for. Oh, and speaking of things I'm thankful for, my wife's cooking that I just enjoyed right before finishing up this post is definitely high on the list. It's also putting me to sleep, so I better wrap this up.
For this week, I already have one post scheduled and I'm hoping to get another written up at some point (2-3 posts/week is seeming pretty realistic at this time), so look forward to those. I'm also hoping to do some reviews of different things, like podcasts I listen to. If there are any specific reviews you want to see me write, just let me know in the comments!
Until next time, enjoy your week! (And have a happy Thanksgiving, to those who will be celebrating it this week. For those who won't, consider taking the wrap up of the current year as a chance to reflect and be thankful anyway).
